He was the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains the only person to have two posthumous acting nominations.
But behind that angelic face lies mysteries: his LIFE and DEATH. James Dean is considered an icon for his “experimental” take on life, which included his ambivalent sexuality. Some reported Dean’s homosexual relationships, others believed he was bisexual while the rest viewed this as a “trade” means of advancing his career.
Medically, he was reported to had had bipolar depression and dyslexia. While other reports point out Dean’s heavy use of alcohol and drugs during the filming of “Rebel Without A Cause”.
There was also a photo that circulated in the internet, a speculated photo of James Dean in his full frontal nudity. Many photo experts believed that the photo was not “touched up” and believed to be authentic. It was believed that this photo was taken before Dean’s career took off. For the benefit of keeping this blog “wholesome”, I intentionally covered the photo. Here’s the alleged nude photo of him. . .
In Chinese, number “4″ signifies “death”. Coincidentally, Dean’s death seemed to have a lot of “4″ number involved: James Dean died at the age of 24 with only 4 active years of his acting career. His Porsche car that led him to his untimely death was numbered 130 (1+3=4) at the front, side and back at Route 466 (now called State Route 46)…and these are just my observations.
On top of that and probably the one part that gives me the goosebumps was when Dean introduced himself to Alec Guinness outside a restaurant, he asked him to take a look at the Spyder. Guinness thought the car appeared ‘sinister’ and told Dean: ‘If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week.’ This encounter took place on September 23, 1955, seven days before Dean’s death. And once again, this was just my observation, try to add 2+3+1+9+5+5 and the sum of that will appear 25. Now add 2+5, the answer is 7. That encounter took place 7 days before Dean’s death.
Anyway, James Dean’s legacy will live on. In fact, a film titled, “Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean” directed by Matthew Mishory and stars another James who will play James Dean…James Preston, is set to hit the theaters in 2011. The movie is an intimate portrait of the outsider icon, set in the years before Dean moved to New York and achieved notoriety. The narrative blends biographical and fictionalized elements. Here are the posters and some of the stills from the film. . .

Yup. And I’m leaving for HCMC once again this afternoon for our event. So while I’m out running my responsibilities in Vietnam, please feel free once again to browse and pay visit to my previous posts. Will be back on 25th September and blogging resumes then.
By the way, that’s Vietnamese model Than Chan San or Trần Thanh Sơn in real life. He’s our face of Vietnam this time for my second trip in his hometown. Cute huh? He recently posed for a Thai magazine. He are some behind-the-scene photos:
But did you know that Than Chan San is one of those models who bravely admitted that he “enhanced” his image??? Yup! Before he became like those in the pics, Than Chan San paid a lump sum of amount to get the face that every girl and girls-alike fantasize. Here’s a pic of the “old” Than Chan San. . .
So what you think? Do you like the “transformed” Than Chan San or the “old” version of him? As the saying goes, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” Catch ya soon, I mean, you guys when I come back from my trip (“,)
The point is, if a non-Filipino citizen can relate or feel the beauty of a film even though the audio sounds strange to him/her, what more for us Tagalog speakers? I thought to myself, if only my Thai friend is in Manila right now, he wouldn’t have second thoughts of watching a genuine indie film that has a story, a value and most especially, a heart that would endear and remind us that when it comes to love, there’s no gender, preference or politics required—only love.
